They say those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Apparently Capcom didn’t get the memo. At Sony’s Tokyo Game Show presentation today, Capcom announced Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps. Umbrella Corps is a spin-off to the main Resident Evil series, bringing to mind the mediocre Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, which released back in March of 2012.
Where Operation Raccoon City was a first person shooter, Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps is a strategic, team-based third-person shooter. The trailer, which you can see above, brings to mind squad based shooters like Rainbow Six and SOCOMs of the past, but will that work in the Resident Evil setting?
The game will feature third-person and first-person points of view, and the now standard third-person cover mechanics. As for weapons, no details were given, but the trailer does heavily feature a special hook-blade weapon used for climbing as well as attacking your foes. They say not to judge a book by it’s cover, but with Capcom’s recent track record, I don’t have very high hopes for this new spin-off attempt.
Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps will launch sometime in 2016. Platforms were not mentioned, but with the big reveal happening at Sony’s Tokyo Game Show presentation, PlayStation 4 is the best bet. The game will also likely arrive on Xbox One and PC sometime in the future.
